Played our first game in 40 degree weather with the wind blowing from all directions on a turf field! This was the first time these kids had played under these conditions and of course our warm up lasted for more than a hour..way to cold to stand around!
The first game was against North Meck SC from North Carolina. We started well and got an early goal and settled into the game when the adjustment of the turf field and the athletism of the opponent got the better of us, and they managed to score. With the score tied at 1-1 after halftime, we managed to score well into the second half and thinking we had done enough is when it got interesting. North Meck scored with 10 minutes left to play and tie the game at 2-2 and then with literally on the last second of the game we scored the winner to win 3-2.
Our second game we came up against Dix Hills SC from New York. Did not play particularly well in the first half and probably should have been down a couple of goals but to their credit we improved in the second half and won 2-0.
Our third game was against Greater Severna Park from Maryland. They were a very organized group with some really tall kids!! We came into the game knowing that if we lost by 3 goals we would be eliminated from the final because of the unique points system the tournament follows. We were on 18 points(2 wins) and Greater Severna (2 ties) were on 8 points....yet faced elimination into the final unless we scored a goal!! We went one better and scored the only goal of the game which secured the victory to the final 3 hours later.....
The "final" game was by far the best game of the tournament for the team from every angle. The boys played with passion, skill and very importantly the intelligence that we preach as a club philosophy. Our opponents were a group from Chicago, IL (GLSA Libertyville). They were by far the most talented group that we had faced so far....very good team in my opinion.
We got off to a great start and probably scored the goal of the tournament which took them by surprise. We managed to impose our style of play under the constant pressure of a more athletic opponent. At the start of second half we managed to score on the rebound of a free kick and took a 2-0 lead. At this point we had no substitutions left as everyone on the bench was injured or fatigue had already set in......our opponent however were 18 strong and making substitutions at will. The last 5 minutes was a pleasure to watch as the team from Chicago scored their goal and applied pressure from all angles, and yet we managed to stay disciplined and absorbed everything they came up with while playing counter attack football in those dying minutes.....
CHAMPIONS OF JEFFERSON CUP IN 2012.....CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE BOYS. THE CLUB IS PROUD OF THEM....
